Pearls are delicate by nature, regular restringing helps prevent wear, damage, and breakage.

We recommend restringing pearls annually to prolong their life and maintain their elegant appearance. All pearl repairs and restringing are completed in-house using traditional techniques and high-quality silk thread knotted between each pearl to prevent friction damage to the nacre.

We can also repair or replace broken or missing pearls, restore damaged clasps, or source matches for vintage pieces. Every item is fully insured while in our care, and we take great pride in handling your jewellery with sensitivity and precision.

We’re often asked about the difference between natural pearls and cultured pearls. Both are classified as gemstones and formed inside molluscs, but their origins differ.

Natural pearls form organically, without human interference, making them incredibly rare and often more valuable. Cultured pearls, both freshwater and saltwater, are created when humans introduce an irritant into the oyster to initiate nacre production (nacre is the natural secretion that forms the pearl). Most pearls available today are cultured, adding further value to the rare natural kind.

Pearls, both cultured and natural, are typically white or cream, with black, grey and silver also common. The main colour (body colour) is often modified by additional colours referred to as overtones, which are typically pink, green, purple or blue. Some pearls also show the iridescent phenomenon known as orient.

At Webbs, we are well versed in maintaining and restoring both cultured and natural pearls to ensure that they remain in premium condition across generations of wear.
